LMM Project - Mistress Pat

I've put this off long enough - best to just get it over with. This is the first LMM book I read that I distinctly disliked (but not the last as I discovered recently with Kilmeny of the Orchard - to be reviewed soon). I'm certainly not blind to the fact that LMM had a penchant for the sentimental and formulaic, but it almost always worked. Mistress Pat is an example where it decidedly did not work. Where Pat is charming and relatable in the first installment she becomes grating and preposterous.

There are so many problems with this book it's hard to know where to start.....

First, it's a tedious, dull and plodding read. It is divided up by year and each year blends into the other with the same general thing happening over and over for eleven interminable years. It doesn't take a genius to know how most LMM books will end, but usually the journey is so delightful that it makes up for the lack of suspense.

Second, the characters are annoying and unbelievable. Pat becomes a ridiculous caricature with her insane resistance to change. She's so unlikable that's it strains all credulity to believe that she has so many opportunities to reject suitors.

Third, the plot is so contrived and predictable that it's almost insulting.

Forth, the love story itself is very unsatisfying. Our leading man is absent for most of the book.

And finally, what does it all mean? Pat never faces up to her many personal issues, but instead is FORCED to accept change by one outlandish plot device after another. She shows no personal growth.

This is one that not even LMM's beautiful writing could save. And although I still adore the character of Judy Plum even she wasn't enough to salvage this train wreck. Gone is the childlike wonder at Judy's fantastical stories and now Pat seems almost disdainful of her old beloved friend.

I'm convinced that every prolific writer produces at least one dud and this is LMM's. She is allowed this and it doesn't change my overall opinion of her one bit.

I've never even heard of this one, and you've made it pretty clear why!

Jeane - are you a Montgomery fan? Obviously, I'm a huge fan and oddly, I've owned a copy of this for ages, but had never read it and didn't even realize it was a sequel until fairly recently. After I read and enjoyed Pat of Silverbush so much I picked this up immediately and was so sadly disappointed!

Well, not a huge fan. I enjoy her books, but not above and beyond the rest. I have read the first two Anne books, and the first three Emily books (which I liked a bit better)and see plenty of film adaptations. Someday I mean to go back and read the entire Anne series.

Isn't it hard to give a bad review for an author you love? I really love Pat of Silver Bush but I was disappointed when I re-read Mistress Pat. I hated that Hilary was out of the picture the whole book and honestly not a lot happened.

I'm still working on my Anne of Green Gables re-read and am stuck on Rainbow Valley. My goal is to finish the Anne series this year and then read the Emily series again.

Can't wait to hear your review on Kilmeny. I don't remember a whole lot about it so will have to add it to my TBR list for next year maybe.

Yes, Sarah! It's so hard and I also just really hate being negative and will look for the good in just about anything! I'm very impressed and jealous that you're working your way through the Anne books. I've been dying to re-read those and have plans to read the entire series someday soon! Sadly, my review of Kilmeny is not going to be very positive either so I'm going to have to do some other more positive posts here before I can get to it or I will feel completely out of balance!

I agree with you on this one, and also have never been able to finish Alcott's Under The Lilacs. Think I finally gave away my copy.

Alcott did write some dreadfully maudlin books didn't she?
