Izzy Pick - Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich

Izzy was instantly drawn to this at the bookstore one day and spent a good half hour sitting by herself giggling over the pictures. I flipped through and approved of the illustrations and threw it in the cart, but I still wasn't expecting much. She wanted to read it right when we got home. This is the first picture book where I've literally had to pause while reading because I was laughing so dang hard!

This book is a bit like Jon Scieszka's The Stinky Cheese Man and Squids Will Be Squids in it's concept (satire of a familiar genre) and lay out (short chapters accompanied by wacky illustrations), but it's still entirely original. I actually enjoyed this a little better than Scieszka's work - which are big favorites in this house! Each entry features a poem about a famous classic monster (Example: Count Dracula Doesn't Know He's Been Walking Around With Spinach In His Teeth and Godzilla Pooped On My Honda). There's also great running gag about how The Phantom of the Opera can't get various songs out of his head - plus a funny bit about the Yeti/Bigfoot mix-up. As if the poems weren't funny enough they are paired with fabulous illustrations!
