My first DiCamillo read and I can happily say that I found it to be a quick, absorbing and highly satisfying read! I really enjoyed DiCamillo's writing style. I found it clear, concise and engaging. Although I read this on my own I kept thinking what a great read aloud this would be - so many wonderful opportunities for discussion. It's up to each individual to determine when (or if) to share this story with a child as it does deal with some rather grim themes (abuse, despair, death, etc.) There is no denying that Edward's journey is bleak in spots, but it never feels hopeless. To me it's a story of love, hope and redemption and is meant to uplift and inspire. I also really loved the accompanying illustrations. They were beautiful and perfectly suited to the story.
Notes: Read in 2010 just for fun!

Oooh, you're new to DiCamillo?? If you liked this, you will love The Tale of Despereaux! It's a great read-aloud, too. I read it to my youngest brother and we both really enjoyed it.
Yep! A total DiCamillo newbie! I'm so excited to try more of her work!
